MAKING AN IMPACT

Jason and Da'Braylin

Before becoming a Big Brother, Jason first interacted with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Brazos Valley through an event with Midcoast Smackdown, a non-profit organization that helps raise money for kids who are battling cancer. The funds raised aid in covering the costs not covered by insurance.

After learning more about the program, Jason decided that he wanted to make his impact on the community by acting as a positive role model and mentor. He emphasized that “these children are our future and it is up to us to teach them about the world.” Jason hopes to share some of the knowledge he has gathered over the years with his Little Brother, Da’Braylin.

Together, Jason and Da’Braylin enjoy cooking, eating, being outdoors, and playing sports. Just recently during a hangout, Da’Braylin caught his first fish and Jason said that was his “favorite memory because Da’Braylin was so proud of himself.” One of the biggest changes that Jason has seen in his Little Brother is that of confidence- “he has been opening up socially the more activities we do together.”

Providing a positive male influence is something that sits close to Jason’s heart. After losing his dad in 2016, Jason wanted to make sure that he is there for those that need him. He believes that “if you have the time and the want, then you can really change a child’s life.”

Being a mentor has been one of the “most satisfying things he has done.”
