As a mentor in our program, you are embarking on a journey to help youth develop the knowledge and skills they need to grow up successfully. Over the first year of your mentoring relationship, you are encouraged to do the following activities as often as you like with your Little.

Support

  • Meet with your Little regularly and consistently

  • Partner with your Little's parent/caregiver

  • Introduce your Little to resource bearing adults

Healthy Habits

  • Practice healthy eating with your Little

  • Participate in random acts of kindness ​

    • Help your Little identify and solve a problem

    • Budget with your Little or attend a financial literacy class

  • Engage in physical activity with your Little 

    • Play sports with your Little​

    • Visit local parks

Academics

  • Discuss enrollment, enlistment, or employment as post-high school plans

  • Foster a love of reading

    • Have book club between you and your Little

      • You could also invite other Bigs and Littles to participate.

    • Visit libraries/bookstores

Resources

  • Visit museums in the community that will enhance your Little's cultural competency

  • Choose and/or support a creative hobby with your Little

  • Support your Little's participation in extracurricular activities

  • Introduce your Little to other youth organizations to get involved in

Empowerment

  • Make sure you follow through on commitments made to your Little

  • Introduce your Little to a variety of people and experiences

  • Allow your Little to become active in their community

  • Learn healthy habits

  • Commit to learning

When you do these things, you are helping to develop their character, cultural competency, self-esteem, personal power, sense of purpose and positive view of their future.
